Hi Mark,
I believe the quote “save nothing for the swim back” means to give whatever endeavour your engaging in your all without reserve. It comes from the movie “Gattaca” in which one character wondered how his physically inferior brother kept beating him in an arduous swim out to sea to a buoy and back to shore. His reply was ” I saved nothing for the swim back !”
